April 2010

moons
Over the last few weeks I've  presented on change and leadership to  professional associations in Perth, Sydney and Hobart, speaking to a wide range of Executives, project managers and change managers.  Two themes emerged that you may find useful in your organisation.

1. Executives and CEOs recognise that their organisations need to continuously change to survive and thrive. When they reflect on their organisation's ability to execute change, they see the disconnect. Executives respond well to data that connects Change Management with business results and real-life examples that make the business case for Change Management.

2. Project Managers are aware that "people issues" can delay projects and destroy benefits. Many PMs are keen to understand the role of a Change Manager and how to make the business case for CM funding at the business case stage.

Change Management is a new discipline and profession and we are all involved in building awareness, so please share your successes and challenges with us. There are no Lone Rangers in change!

Best wishes

New survey: Resistance to change is top obstacle for building organisational capabilities

2010
A new global survey of 1,440 executives in January 2010 by McKinsey & Company found nearly 60% identified building organisational capabilities such as lean operations, project management or talent management, as one of their top three priorities.

Yet only one third of companies focus their training programs on building the capability that adds most to business performance.

Resistance to change was identified as the number one challenge, (36% of respondents) as well as lack of resources (35%) and clear vision/objectives (34%).

The good news is when senior executives engage, capability-building initiatives are more aligned with business needs, resources are increased and programs are more effective in driving organisational performance. Read more

"I am here for my mother and all the Americans who are forced to spend time arguing with health insurance companies instead of focusing on getting well.

I am here for the millions of lives that will be touched and in some cases, saved, by health insurance reform.

I am here for the small businesses who are forced to choose between health care and hiring.

I am here for the seniors who are unable to afford the prescriptions they need."
