Managers - from team leaders through to senior executives - make change happen.
With the rapid growth of Change Management as a profession and a discipline that's aligned to project management, let's not make the mistake of giving change managers the job of implementing the change! One of their key responsibilities is to equip and enable managers to be successful change leaders.
An important lesson learned from the past few years in change management is that managers have been neglected by change managers and communications specialists. End-users and front line employees have been the focus of most change management activities.
We need to treat managers as a unique group that needs to get on board and involved with change - not just as conduit for communicating to their teams.
Change Managers also need to support managers at all levels in developing the change skills they need to lead their teams through change. This work needs to be a key deliverable in all Change Management Plans.
One to one coaching, small group coaching, leadership development programs and change management training and toolkits are just some of the ways we can support managers in being the best change leaders they can be.
Best wishes Catherine Smithson, Managing Director

Six mistakes that can derail change
|
What do you believe is the biggest roadblock to change?
According to Robert Miles, it's "getting organisations to execute their bold new ideas quickly". His research found that CEOs typically say "We could have - and should have - moved faster."
In a new article published in the Harvard Business Review (Jan-Feb 2010) he lists the six most common "speed brakes" on change. These brakes are also present in business-as-usual, but pose a much greater threat to transformation:
1. Cautious management culture; 2. Business-as-usual management processes; 3. Initiative gridlock; 4. Recalcitrant executives; 5. Disengaged employees; 6. Loss of focus during execution.

Light Bulb Moment - Change Coaching for managers |
"We were embarking on a major change that involved the relocation of a a large number of our people. As well, we were taking the opportunity to restructure and standardise processes. "Our managers were in the tough position of being personally affected by the changes as well as implementing the changes with their people and keep the business running. "The solution we came up to support them was one-on-one Change Coaching. These individual sessions with an experienced Change Manager gave managers the time and space to think about their personal situation and the decisions they had to make. The coaching also gave them practical support in talking to their teams and managing all the people issues that came up. The results were very positive."
