Change Portfolio Management is the next big thing in Change Management.  We believe that to build this new capability,  organisations need a strong foundation of project-based Change Management.   For example, they need to adopt a consistent, structured methodology that's aligned with project management and assign capable Change Managers to key projects. 

Looking into our crystal ball, we predict in the next five years Change Portfolio Management will be well established in major organisations.  With so much to learn, it's a good time to be in Change Management!

In a major milestone for the Change Management profession, Prosci's Change Management Certification Program presented by Being Human has became the first and only Change Management training program to be endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management.  Members earn 20 CPD points on successful completion of the program.

The program was also recently endorsed by the Project Management Institute and PMI members earn 24 PDUs by attending the program.

These endorsements are a great leap forward in the recognition of Change Management as a key contributor to change success and a complementary discipline to Project Management.

 Decoding resistance to change
Human roadblock
In this excellent article, resistance to change is reframed as a valuable source of feedback.  Yes, it can be irrational and self-serving  - but if we accept it as a source of energy and input, we can use it to deliver better results from change.

Authors Jeffrey Ford and Laurie Ford also recommend five actions to take to use resistance as a change tool:  explain what's changing, explain why, look for the pitfalls,  elicit ideas and uncover past failures.

Light Bulb Moment: Off-course Pilots blame  lack of Change Management!

In the USA in October, two pilots forgot to land at Minneapolis Airport, ignored air traffic controllers for 90 minutes and flew 110 miles off course, causing the Defence Dept to put four fighter jets on runway alert.  It was only after a flight attendant called the cockpit that the pilots realised they had missed the airport!
 
Theories that they were sleeping or arguing were quickly disproved. The pilots admitted to investigators they were distracted by changes flowing from Delta Airlines recent takeover of Northwest Airlines.  The First Officer was using his laptop to train the Captain in Delta's new flight scheduling system that affects Pilots' rosters, pay and where they're based.   Read more

A poll of the 144 passengers on board revealed 100% would have preferred Delta to have used Change Management instead of leaving employees to work things out for themselves.  (OK, we made up that part but the rest is true!)
