Successful change depends on effective leadership at all levels - from team leaders through to senior executives. This means that change capabilities need to be an integral part of the leadership development curriculum.
Adopting a consistent change methodology and tools is necessary but not sufficient. Without leadership at all levels, change management can become a set of checklists and templates - or worse, a set of tick boxes for compliance.
Just as a bird needs two wings to fly, leadership skills and a change methodology are both needed for building organisational change management capability. In our experience, the starting point can be either one, as long as the other capability follows quickly.

New studies show up to 70% of changes fail
|
The majority of changes fail, according to a new global study of 10,000 change projects. The Standish Group's 2009 Chaos Study found that only 32% of changes succeeded, 44% were challenged and 24% failed. Read more
IBM's Global Making Change Work Study found that only 41% of changes succeeded. It also found success rates increased when organisations used a structured Change Management approach and professional change managers. Read more
The high failure rate of change underlines the importance of change management in managing risk and ensuring people are ready, willing and able to change.
